Though New York is a showcase for the who’s-who and what’s-what in the art world, New Jersey’s art scene is just as diverse, varied and impressive. Our state can more than hold its own, and we have the museums and galleries to prove it.
Whether you’re looking for incredible garden architecture, outstanding performances or world-class paintings, you can find works of art displayed all over the Garden State. The following six galleries, for instance, are hosting must-see shows this season:
- In Holmdel, James Yarosh Associates Fine Art Gallery is hosting a special “Her Story” exhibition, which explores the art of two female artists of the 20th century. Miriam Beerman and Sheba Sharrow, who both lived parts of their lives in New Jersey, were humanistic expressionists who explored deep emotional themes through their work. The show runs until September.
- The Akwaaba Gallery in Newark presents “The Unveiling,” a solo exhibition by Raphael Ogoe. Ogoe is an architect and a designer as well as an artist, and his work is dynamic, colorful and explores contemporary African culture and daily life. His art is on display until April 27.
- Frenchtown is already a charming place to take a daytrip, and a stop at ArtYard makes any visit memorable. On display now until June 2 are the delicate, otherworldly charcoal drawings of artiest Charlotte Schulz, in an exhibition entitled “A Constellation of Small Events.”
- If the reality of a photo is what catches your eye, you are in for a treat when you visit Westwood’s Gallery 270, which specializes in fine art photography. Mark Reeves’s “Faces in the Crowd” exhibition, on display until April 30, captures individual moments and people amid the rush of daily life.
- Enjoy the spring weather and the arts at Clifton Arts Center’s sculpture garden this April. Their “Expressions Through Art and Wood” display showcases traditional paintings, the medium of wood and the way the two intersect. The exhibition runs until April 27.
- Ocean City Arts Center offers the best and brightest with their “Juried Photography Show,” where some of the most gifted photographers of the Delaware Valley capture the locale at its most breathtaking. This show is on display until April 29.
