Trading since 1920, so rapidly approaching its centenary, Barlow Tyrie remains a family business and is now in its third generation, with Peter Tyrie and Peter’s sons, James and Mark, working in management and product design. We specialise in the manufacture of outdoor teak furniture, to which we have added stainless steel, powder-coated aluminium, eucalyptus, and hand-woven synthetic fibre.
These newer ranges have proved incredibly successful and feature strongly in the current Barlow Tyrie collection; however expert use of high-grade teak remains at the heart of the business – and with demand for quality teak furniture on the rise, its use can be seen in several of the new Barlow Tyrie ranges.
Why teak?
Teak (Tectona Grandis) is a hardwood with natural water-resistant qualities and a striking grain, so has lent itself over centuries to the manufacture of outdoor furniture, boat decks, and other products which are to be exposed to the elements for long periods of time. Its other main advantage is a comparatively short growth period, so it can be plantation-grown efficiently and sustainably. Plantation teak is considered a renewable resource, as it is harvested and managed to produce a sustainable supply.
Quality and craftsmanship
Whichever materials we use, we make sure to source the best available, and our furniture is produced using the highest standards of craftsmanship. These are beautiful pieces, built to last.
Our ranges often feature a combination of materials – chairs with a stainless steel frame and teak seat and back, for example – or tables with a powder-coated aluminium frame and a teak top – plus ranges using ceramic or HPL tabletops, or cord or Textilene© in the chairs. The main criterion is always to combine form and function with manufacturing expertise – and so create pleasing designs with good ergonomic performance – all to make outdoor living as comfortable as it is stylish.
Design is at the heart
While we have our own award-winning design team, we like to work with outside designers as well. Currently we produce five major ranges designed by internationally-respected designers – each very different in style and approach, but each bringing valuable variation to our catalogue.
Tim Fenby is an award-winning British designer, who has worked extensively around the world. He is renowned for bringing a unique understanding of global markets and trends to his designs, which can be seen today in quality independent retailers and major department stores. Tim has designed the sleek and modern Avon range in teak exclusively for Barlow Tyrie.
Laura Kirar is the New York based founder and creative director of LAURA KIRAR Design. Drawing inspiration from Japanese basket weaving, Laura has created a unique tri-axial weave pattern for our Kirar range. The design has subtly married traditional weave techniques with modern aesthetics and, with its sumptuous curves and generous proportions, the Kirar Collection delivers both comfort and beauty.
Vladimir Kagan is one of today’s most enduring designers of modern furniture, with a career spanning over sixty years. He is recognised as one of the most important furniture designers of the 20th century, and his early designs from the forties, fifties, and sixties have become icons of modernity. Kagan designs are avidly collected by connoisseurs and museums worldwide. Vladimir has designed our striking Arizona, Dune, and Savannah ranges.
