Summer’s biggest celebrations may be behind us, but there’s still time to make the most of outdoor living before the season winds down. After months of pool parties, family barbecues and evenings spent on the patio, your yard may be ready for a little attention before Labor Day arrives.
The good news is that you don’t need a major project to give your outdoor spaces new life. A few thoughtful updates can make your backyard feel inviting again, just in time for one last celebration of summer.
Revive flower beds. Stuart Leventhal, owner of Down to Earth Living in Pomona, N.Y., recommends checking hanging baskets and containers as they may need watering more frequently during periods of hot weather. In addition, consider replacing those that are truly past their prime flowering season. Refresh bed with “colorful Black-Eyed Susans, Zinnias and Hydrangeas,” he says.
Support wildlife. Add a touch of natural beauty to your yard by welcoming birds, butterflies and bees. Leventhal suggests installing a bird bath or a shallow dish of fresh water to a garden to attract these thirsty creatures. You’ll want to be mindful of mosquitoes, however. To combat these nuisances, give your guests bug spray or citronella bracelets and add lavender and peppermint to the décor. These provide aromas that most people find pleasing and deter mosquitoes. A breezy patio fan can keep you cool while making it difficult for weak-flying mosquitoes to hover and land.
Update your outdoor accents. New throw pillows, seat cushions or an outdoor rug can instantly transform a patio or deck. Look for bold colors and durable fabrics that add comfort while standing up to the elements.
Create a cool retreat. If the afternoon sun keeps guests indoors, add shade with a market umbrella or shade sail. A comfortable, shaded seating area invites people to linger long after lunch is over. Those along the Shore should consider the material when setting up shade. “In coastal environments like Long Beach Island, materials matter,” says Faye Roeber of Long Beach Island’s Faye Roeber Interiors. “Use marine-grade fabrics and corrosion-resistant frames that can handle salt air and wind, and make sure it’s anchored.”
Set the mood with lighting. As evenings begin to arrive a little earlier, layered lighting becomes even more important. Lanterns, candles and battery-operated LED lights add warmth and ambiance while making outdoor gatherings feel more intimate.
Designate a drink station. A stylish bar cart, serving tray or beverage tub keeps drinks within easy reach and frees up the dining table. It’s a simple touch that makes entertaining feel effortless.
Extend the evening outdoors. Keep the party going after sunset with a portable fire pit for conversation and s’mores, or turn the backyard into an outdoor movie theater with a projector and comfortable seating. Either option creates a memorable finale to summer entertaining.
