Set The Mood With The Right Lighting

July 8, 2026

As the sun slips below the horizon, a beautifully designed patio shouldn’t disappear into the darkness—it should take on an entirely new character. Thoughtfully layered outdoor lighting transforms terraces, pool decks, gardens and dining spaces into warm, inviting retreats where conversations linger, cocktails flow and entertaining continues long after dusk.

From elegant architectural fixtures and discreet landscape illumination to the soft glow of lanterns and candlelight, the right lighting creates both ambiance and function. But how to select the right fixture for your patio?

First, consider your needs, say the folks at WBI Construction in Annandale. If you’re a frequent host of get-togethers, consider string lights and perimeter rail lighting. One who uses the patio to relax and unwind can benefit from recessed deck lights and step lights. For those whose family uses the patio as an outdoor hub, integrated stair lights and fixtures with motion detectors are useful.

And don’t overlook simple yet stylish portable table lights, such as those found in restaurants.

“It’s a look that translates perfectly for a patio,” says Karen B. Wolf of Short Hills-based k+co Living. “It solves more than one problem. Many patios simply aren’t wired for overhead lighting, and even when they are, a strong downlight can dampen the atmosphere as too bright or uninspired, plus invite a few unplanned guests in the form of bugs.”

Avoid the stress of extension cords and out-of-reach electric outlets and opt for rechargeable table lamps.

“They come in a range of sizes and most offer dimmable settings, which makes it simple to create just the right level of glow,” says Wolf.

Our expert prefers models by Zafferano, Two’s Company and Addison Rose, which “offers charming designs with scalloped and rattan shades that feel especially fresh.”

Adds Wolf: “Place one beside you for an easy outdoor reading moment, or cluster a few down the center of a dining table to create a warm, layered setting for entertaining.”
