First, consider your needs, say the folks at WBI Construction in Annandale. If you’re a frequent host of get-togethers, consider string lights and perimeter rail lighting. One who uses the patio to relax and unwind can benefit from recessed deck lights and step lights. For those whose family uses the patio as an outdoor hub, integrated stair lights and fixtures with motion detectors are useful.
And don’t overlook simple yet stylish portable table lights, such as those found in restaurants.

Many patios simply aren’t wired for overhead lighting, and even when they are, a strong downlight can dampen the atmosphere as too bright or uninspired, plus invite a few unplanned guests in the form of bugs.”
Avoid the stress of extension cords and out-of-reach electric outlets and opt for rechargeable table lamps.
“They come in a range of sizes and most offer dimmable settings, which makes it simple to create just the right level of glow,” says Wolf.
