To help homeowners who are searching for durable patio furniture, NJ HOME asked Florham Park-based designer Karla Trincanello of Interior Designs Inc. to recommend furnishings that can take wear and tear, as well as tips on making an outdoor space look like another room versus and afterthought. Read her advice below:

“Anodized metal furniture and faux wicker/rattan are wonderful and are weather-resistant and preferred outdoor furnishings for the least maintenance. To bring a softer, more residential ambiance to an outdoor space, use weather- and mildew-resistant Sunbrella-type indoor/outdoor fabrics for seat cushions and pillows that are also soil- and stain-repellent for easy maintenance. Many trellis-type structures and pergolas or gazebos also make the outdoor area an intimate space and provide sun and weather change protection. I have added sheer mildew-resistant drapery for that summer porch feeling, as well as motorized sunshades that act as screens for the comfort level of a breezy space while protecting everyone from insects and the heat of the sun.”
