Once upon a time, homeowners created restrooms sans bathtubs as the place one could powder his or her wig. That was then. These spaces today are more commonly referred as half-bathrooms, and they’re a standard amenity in most homes.
Though powder rooms might lack the space for the accoutrements found in an en suite bathroom, they still can be designed thoughtfully and dressed to the nines. After all, a home’s value can increase by 10 percent with the addition of a half-bathroom.
Thinking about updating the powder room in your home? We combed through our back issues and curated a collection of spaces that will inspire you:

The powder room in this Moorestown house, designed by Brittany Wurzak Hakimfar of Far Studio, features hand-painted, textured-plaster walls. It took the artist nearly a week to layer the walls in a deep purple tone that mirrors the vanity’s Calacatta Viola marble.

In this Basking Ridge home, designer Pam Cooper of Watchung-based Cooper Interiors added new life to the powder room next to the kitchen. The large-scale floral wallpaper in a “tree of life” pattern celebrates green all year long.

The powder room in a Bay Head home by Beth Insabella of Little Silver’s Insabella Design is out of sight and tucked away beneath stairs. With bold orange-red walls and pops of navy, however, it’s a space that is hard to forget.

The paisley wallpaper for the powder room in this Tinton Falls townhome was one of the first papers James Yarosh, founder of the eponymous art gallery and design firm, showed owner Carol Pardee. “It really punches it up,” says Pardee. “It doesn’t look basic. I love that everything James does looks unique.”

For the powder room of this Ridgewood home, Allison Handler of the Ridgewood-based Allison Handler Design used similar ideas that she employed in the kitchen. A Cristallo quartzite countertop is the star of the bathroom, while a floating vanity glows due to quartzite-integrated lighting.
