Music To Our Ears

It’s no secret that pianos can be grand. Few objects add drama, history and depth to a space like one of these stately instruments, and even fewer so easily create both a focal point and a reason for gathering. Whether you’re cheering on your child as they tickle the ivories for “Heart And Soul,” proving to your guests that you still know “Für Elise” or striking out the chords for a “Don’t Stop Believing” singalong, a piano attracts an audience.

It can also make a serious design statement, as these Garden State spaces prove. We dove into our archives and curated some of our favorite examples of a piano pulling a room into perfect harmony.

This great room in Upper Saddle River, created by Laurie DiGiacomo, effortlessly balances sophistication and livable ease. Bathed in light from the dramatic windows, the piano takes center stage—perfect for an impromptu recital or an intimate moment alike.

When designing a South Orange home, Sarah Storms of Styled by Storms knew the homeowners’ vintage baby grand would make a perfect focal point for the living room. She surrounded it with subtle, contemporary touches, like the Corso cocktail table, to bring the piece into the modern day.

Instead of downsizing when their nest became empty, the owners of this Upper Saddle River colonial transformed it into a multigenerational attraction, with help from Jennifer Pacca. The great room is both dramatic and cozy, and the grand piano nestles next to the redone fireplace to add lived-in ease.

This music room, also in Upper Saddle River, is the perfect symphony of design elements. Brooke Hills Sperling of Columbia Brooke Hills Design let the Yamaha Disklavier piano create classic elegance on its own, and ten complimented it with a Kelly Wearstler brass chandelier and eclectic art.

In a Saddle River home, designer Robyn Stevens of Silhouette Studios created a careful balance to ensure the piano room shined. The Tibetan hand-knotted rug complements the watery blue glaze walls and the pearl gray of the woven silk settee faces the instrument—perfect for a show.
