What is it about the modern farmhouse aesthetic that has it persevering as a trend for so many years now? Perhaps it’s the rustic chic lifestyle and cozy vibes—created by clean lines, neutral color schemes and contemporary finishes—it exudes. There’s something about farmhouse-style homes that feel welcoming and put-together but almost effortless to design.
In late 2023 and into 2024, experts predict that the modern farmhouse look will remain a mainstay—but it will evolve. Think along the lines of incorporating more natural materials such as wood and stone, as well as vintage-inspired furniture and décor.
If you’re looking to amp up your own modern farmhouse décor or are hoping to redesign your space from scratch, check out the luxury homes below for inspiration, each of which was featured in NJ HOME or one of our sister publications:
Stunning in Springfield

This new-construction build in Union County was a blank slate, which designer Michal Rubin of Livingston-based MR Interiors injected with just the right amount of farmhouse chic. The spacious dining room has wainscotting on the walls and a rustic pinewood table that perfectly complements the bold blue velvet chairs.
A Wyckoff Winner

Have you ever seen a more glamorous kitchen island than this? Believe it or not, this kitchen was built from scratch in an outdoor room at a Wyckoff ranch that had a naturally vaulted ceiling and large pane windows. Designer/architect Dan D’Agostino in Township of Washington chose bright white cabinets and quartz countertops, signature farmhouse details which are a striking contrast against the dark wooden beams.
Holm(del) With a View

“Modern with a little bit of farmhouse flair” is what the owners of this brand-new home on Bell Works in Holmdel requested of their Tinton Falls designer, Jill Ryan Interiors. And what resulted was a stunning three-bedroom, four-bathroom home that’s cozy and rustic, yet also accommodating to their six kids and seven grandkids. Highlights include the multiple lounge areas intended for chilling, including one in the basement and another loft space situated between two upstairs bedrooms.
Ringwood Log Cabin

When the husband wants a rustic kitchen and the wife wants a more modern feel, what’s a couple to do? Hire a designer like Cozette Brown Interior Designs in Ringwood to help meld the two styles seamlessly. The lake views from this Passaic County kitchen are easily its best attribute, but Brown gave the view a functional kitchen to match, with a large-format anthracite stone tile, a spacious white island and subtle wooden accents in the overhead beams and the hood.
Powder Room Perfect

Designer Mary FitzPatrick Scro of Z+ Interiors used just the right amount of shiplap in this Allendale home’s first-floor powder room, painting over it with Sherwin-Williams Vogue Green. With its vintage-style faucet and natural wood, the farm sink enhances the colonial home’s farmhouse vibes.
