The space: It was cramped 14-foot-by-10-foot room limited in uses because of its diminutive size. But the hopeful homeowners had a desire to use the space for multiple purposes: a breakfast room and a den. The challenge? Turning the small room into not one but two functioning living spaces while maintaining a cohesive flow throughout. The design analysis: We enlisted the expertise of designer Eric J. Schmidt of North Caldwell-based Eric J. Schmidt Interiors (eric schmidtinteriors.com), whose vision was to optimize the space for “flow, function and fabulous style.” To create a “transitional” character for the space, Schmidt’s palette consisted of blues and ivory/white, which were melded in a subtle play between geometry and texture. Schmidt introduced a corner banquette upholstered in rich navy blue faux leather—a perfect spot to enjoy breakfast or sip a cup of tea. In the opposite corner is a cozy sectional sofa in an indigo ikat print. Schmidt envisions it as a welcoming spot to curl up with a book or catch the Sunday game. (There’s a flat-screen TV on the opposite wall.) In the theme of functionality, he opted for a round side table, which can be easily moved around and used as a cocktail table when the need arises. With the breakfast nook and den area in their respective corners, comprising minimal, modern designs, the space feels bigger but maintains a cohesive style, he says. “The blending of texture, geometry and color make for an updated multi-use room,” Schmidt explains. You’ll find some of his fabric selections and more on the opposite page.
A cabana weave wall covering in Poolside Splash by Phillip Jefferies was added for texture and a more updated look, says designer Eric Schmidt. It’s the perfect complement to the bright white wainscot, he says.
A large modern lantern in polished nickel by Ralph Lauren anchors and illuminates the room.
A simple window valance allows more natural light into the space than regular curtains. Schmidt created one using Champleve Admiral, a bold geometric pattern by Kravet Design.

The adjustable table by Eileen Gray was designed for small, multi-use spaces and provides endless options for this space.
For extra seating in the breakfast nook, Schmidt added a “Paris Bistro” side chair by Frontgate Contract.
