Easy Ways To Spruce Up Your Patio

With Memorial Day and the start of the outdoor entertaining season right around the corner, you’re probably getting your backyard in tiptop shape. That means the pool will be opened and the grounds neatly manicured. But what about your patio, where details show off your personality and can really make a good time a great one?

If you haven’t updated your patio’s surface in a while, it might be time for a change. These days, homeowners are seeking larger, sleeker paver designs. “Traditional, modern stone styles are being reimagined by paver companies,” says Emil Rostello, landscape designer at Borst Landscape & Design in Allendale. “While a common paver size used to be 6×9, we’re now seeing a trend toward larger-scale pavers. These larger options create a less busy, cleaner look—perfect for homeowners seeking modern simplicity.”

Other paver trends to consider:

  • Modern takes on traditional. “We’re seeing an interest in traditional brick looks with a modern twist,” Rostello says, pointing to the towns with Tudor-style homes that Borst serves. “One standout trend are herringbone patterns made with narrow, elongated brick-style pavers in lighter tones, creating refined layouts that complement classic architecture.”
  • Modern farmhouse influence. This trend—marked by white exteriors with black trim—is still going strong. “To match this aesthetic, many homeowners lean toward lighter-colored pavers paired with charcoal borders,” the landscape designer says. “This combination creates a striking yet subtle contrast that perfectly complements the farmhouse design.”

While there’s nothing wrong with using last year’s chaise longues and outdoor sofas, especially if they’re timeless and built to stand the test of time, adding a trendy piece or two will give any space—and get-together—a modern and happening vibe. And that means more than buying a new complete outdoor dining set from the big chain hardware store.

“The days of matching all your furniture are gone,” says Michelle Weisman, director of visual design for Fortunoff Backyard Store, which has several locations throughout New Jersey. What’s “in” these days is to mix and match colors, patterns and styles. Neutral hues paired with pillows, umbrellas and rugs in bright colors like buttercup yellow and mineral blue are in, she says. “We are also noticing an increase in stainless steel serving and entertaining pieces that complement the growing trend of outdoor kitchen setups,” she adds.

Other furnishing trends to consider:

  • Polymer furniture. These marine-grade pieces merge comfort with style: They’re durable, easy to maintain and uber restful.

  • Mixing materials. “Playing with color and texture can elevate any space, indoors or out, but this year, mixing materials is trending,” Weisman says. She suggests, for example, pairing solid teak tables with resin wicker chairs for a sustainable and visually stunning setup.

  • Statement umbrellas. “Patio umbrellas are always trending, but this year, customers are going bold and adding eye-catching cantilever or market umbrellas to their space,” notes Weisman. A cantilever offers sun protection and adds more dimension to any patio, she says, adding that an umbrella in a contrasting shade color makes a style statement. “Most outdoor umbrellas that [Fortunoff Backyard Store] carries come with a multi-position horizontal tilt and a limited warranty for additional peace of mind and convenience.”

  • Premium décor. Your patio looks great, but you can kick it up a notch by adding top-of-the-line accessories. “Incorporating premium décor items, such as weather-resistant throw pillow and rugs, enhances the aesthetic appeal of any outdoor space,” Weisman says. “Outdoor living areas focus on sustainability, versatility and seamless integration between indoor and outdoor environments. Homeowners are increasingly investing in eco-friendly materials, wellness-focused designs and multifunctional spaces that cater to relaxation, entertainment and everyday living.” Think items like stainless steel serving trays, drink dispensers and other must-haves for entertaining.

  • Adaptable seating. Pieces like outdoor sectionals, modular furniture and expandable dining sets are versatile in size and function, making them ideal solutions for small gatherings and big bashes alike. “People have the added benefit of growing with their furniture,” Weisman says. “They can add on or subtract as they need as life changes around them.”
