Homeowners are always looking to add a “wow” factor to their space, whether it’s a newly constructed house or a room in need of a facelift. For a young couple moving into a historic Maplewood home, a design that checked off “unexpected, powerful and impactful” was the order, says Karen Wolf, principal of Short Hills-based k+co Living. And that’s exactly what she gave them.
This lounge area is a prime example of a room that makes a lasting impression. Once a little-used formal living room, Wolf transformed it into a space to retire to with guests for after-dinner conversation and relaxation. Inspired by mid-century modern design, Wolf surrounded a Four Hands double-round coffee table with four Barcelona-style chairs from Lee Industries, including a striking pair in tan leather. There are a few right angles in the lounge’s other furnishings, emphasizing the room’s cozy intentions. The circles descending from the Circular Ring chandelier from Warmly Décor are echoed in the occasional tables from Harrington.

The wall of bookshelves set against an eye-catching blue-and-white geometric wallpaper adds to the drama. Meanwhile, the deep blue-gray paint—Asphalt on the walls and Stonecutter on the ceiling, both from Benjamin Moore—makes the space feel warm and enveloping.
This room appears in “The ‘Oh!’ Factor” from the winter edition of NJ HOME.
