While most of us were hunkered down in our homes this winter, interior designer Sharon Sherman of Wyckoff’s Thyme and Place Design was on the road checking out the latest products and styles featured at the annual Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Orlando. One of the exhibits she toured was The New American Home 2022, and she shared some of the trends of the show house with NJ HOME.
Built by Envy Homes, like many showhomes, this house is meant to inspire and highlight design trends and imagination in homebuilding. Generally, these homes are grandiose buildings measuring 8,000 to 10,000+ square feet. Visitors are met with soaring ceilings and meandering hallways leading the visitor through a wonderland of interior design.
No one was disappointed with this space. Considering the cost of land and evolving lifestyles, this home is much more relatable for today’s buyers. Measuring just over 4,600 square feet, this home takes a different approach to homebuilding. Desirable features such as luxurious details, amenities and sustainability are on display throughout the house.
Warm Welcome
Design details greet you at the front door. Lights are recessed into the doorways which makes them glow. The wine room is framed with glass walls that display a wine collection and create the walls of the stairwell.
Kitchen and Color
I love the colors used in this space: The designer selected a combination of light and dark finishes, and the effect is subtle with a dash of understated elegance. Signature Kitchen Suite appliances are featured throughout the house. Aged bronze accents are used for the hardware as well as the light fixtures.
Just through the kitchen door is a lavish kitchen pantry. The dark finish of the kitchen is repeated in the pantry. Lighting plays an important role in the design of this space.
Plenty of Room for Dining
Though small by some standards, this space is large enough to entertain and is not a waste of real estate. The dining room boasts an innovative twist on the traditional light fixture. The designer chose multiple pendants to create a striking design statement. This lighting concept is repeated in several of the rooms.
What makes the space seem expansive is the use of the view to the courtyard. A wall of glass doors can be opened, inviting the outside in without adversely affecting the interior climate control of the house.
Connecting the Outdoor Environment
Although the lot was long and narrow, the space never felt restrictive. All the rooms open to a beautiful courtyard featuring a pool and outdoor entertainment area. The view through the wall of glass doors visually doubles the width of the home.
The home is energy efficient with a nod to green building standards. According to the NAHB, “The home is expected to achieve net-zero status and Emerald-level certification from the National Green Building Standard. It will also earn certification from ENERGY STAR, Indoor airPLUS, and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Zero Energy Ready Home Program.”
Second-Floor Living
The second floor features the bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, laundry room and an exercise flex area that boasts work-at-home spaces, seating and a hospitality center.
No home would be complete without a gaming area. The lighting design of that game room creates another design statement.
Principal Bedroom and Bathroom
Both the master bedroom and bathroom exude luxury. Recessed LED lighting strips once again provide illumination and decoration. Wood-stepped molding details flank the headboard wall. This is a nice texture around the bed. I especially like the asymmetrical design of the furniture flanking the headboard.
The bathroom features an oversized steam shower for two with integrated lighting in the wall. A floating vanity is crowned with an extra thick quartz countertop. Oversized mirrors take full advantage of the ceiling height. The entire room is inspiring.
Roof-Top Entertaining
Moving back down the hall you find the stairway to the third floor. Once again, taking full advantage of the connection to the outdoors, there is a fabulous, covered rooftop kitchen/bar area complete with breathtaking views. Features include built-in seating around the perimeter and a fire pit with furnishings to invite conversation.
Not Just for Cars
Garage design has been gaining more prominence in today’s homes. This one features a pet washing area any pup would be proud to use. It shows just how important our fur babies are not just to our lives but our lifestyles.
Curves Are Sexy
Tambour-like details were used throughout the house. The pattern was repeated in wall panels for the hallway, behind the sink in the principal bath, and the ceiling above the rooftop bar. Soft neutral colors are accented with edgy dark pops of style and softened with the curved millwork and furnishings.
A curved sink and decorative hardware are used in a guest bathroom. Round shaped light fixtures are seen throughout the home.
