A massive new art space has opened in Newark, in the renovated Hahne’s building, which once housed the department store but has been closed since the 1980s. Express Newark is Rutgers University-Newark’s 50,000-square-foot arts incubator that includes spaces for artists in residence, a print shop, a 3D printing studio, video production and portrait studios, classrooms and a public art gallery. Organizers say they hope the public arts spaces will make residents feel connected to the area. “We want people who walk past the building to feel included,” said Express Newark co-director Anne Schaper Englot. Also new on the art scene is a contemporary gallery that opened on Park Avenue in Rutherford last fall. Named after the mythical beast, Harpy (pictured above) is owned by Michael Olivo, who attended University of the Arts, studying illustration, but ultimately receiving a BFA in painting/drawing. He opened the gallery to give his peers a space to show their work. Monthly exhibitions consist of two to three artists who all emphasize the figurative. Upcoming exhibitions feature emerging artists Taylor Carpenter, Andy Cahill, Jesse Balmer, Elle Michalka, Sam Vanallemeersch and Lale Westvind.
