It’s cold and gray outside, and the winter blues might be settling in. Thankfully, there are many ways to kick those blues. Try a casual gathering with friends, a quick weekend trip—or a stroll to view impressive art.
New Jersey is filled with galleries and museums featuring paintings, sculptures, photographs and more that will enrich your mind, feed your soul and offer some inspiration for your own collection. Here are a few options:

Still Life Show, Ridgewood Art Institute, Ridgewood; Jan. 24. Don’t miss opening day of this still-life showcase, which also highlights the work of local artists. All paintings are done in oil, pastel or watercolor.

Space In Time Exhibition, Guttenberg Arts, Guttenberg; through Jan. 26. This group exhibition features works by Eileen Ferara, Zheyu Wang, Danielle Rodriguez and Osy Milian, all of them currently part of the Guttenberg Arts residents program. Pieces span from print to sculpture to paintings, all of them exploring identity, memory, nature and the human condition.

Fall Exhibitions Last Look, Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Summit; Jan. 24. In addition to giving you one last chance to see the art of Ojore Lutalo and three other unique exhibits, this evening event will also include discussions and a chance to meet the artists themselves.

I’ll Make Me A World, Prologue, ArtWorks, Trenton; Feb. 1. Though this exhibit will be on display until April, you won’t want to miss the opening reception on Feb. 1. Showcasing the work of Clifford Ward, this “first look” explores an artistic journey through the lens of Afrofuturism—blending cultural heritage, forward-thinking motifs and an empowering vision for the future.

New Sculpture/New Jersey, Morris Museum, Morristown; through Feb. 2. This yearly celebration of our state’s best sculptures always pleases, impresses and innovates. Come see over 40 works from 11 artists working in a wide range of materials, including malleable aluminum, cold-worked glass and industrial robotics in addition to ceramics, forged iron, and steel.

Nanette Carter: A Question of Balance, Montclair Art Museum, Montclair; Feb. 8. For nearly five decades, artist Nanette Carter has been proving herself a master of abstract art, and this show offers a deep dive into her work, particularly her fascination with the tension between instability and equilibrium.
